NEWSLETTER THE CLUB The Club is located between the Branch Road to the A36 and Green lane, and access to it is from the former.  The entrance is about 200 metres from the main road that runs roughtly north south through the village. The beautiful ground is in a prime location bounded by tall mature trees, with the Clubhouse and Millennium Green on one side and the grounds of Hinton House on the other History.    Cricket in Hinton has a long history. Robin Robertson Glasgow's family diaries speak of the village playing (and losing) way back in the mid 19th century. In those days it would be the blacksmith, the local squire and the vicar each having a hand in it. However we don't have to go that far back in our records to find that the vicar of the day insisted that the Sunday matches ended in time for the teams to attend the evening service; he must have owned the lawn mower to have wheeled such power! Current Club.   During the last few years the club has gradually widened it's appeal.  Its first and second teams play in the Surridge Wiltshire County League Divisions 1 and 6 respectively.   The Sunday League XI play in the Globe Sports NSCL Conferencew Premier Division thus coming up against the likes of Bath, Lansdown, and Keynsham. The club is an amateur members club with nobody receiving remuneration.  The Club has a full fixture list and in a typical season plays a total of about 90 games, of which around 75 are at home.  See also web site  www.hccc.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp. However the Management does sponsor courses for coaches, umpires scorers and grounds men. For the last twenty years we have cultivated youth cricket and the Youth Section is fully integrated into the club. Membership of the Club is open to non-players. To join it is necessary to join the 100 club which includes an element for membership.   The Clubhouse is designed for disabled use and includes good facilities for both players and spectators alike.  Players of all ages and abilities are welcome. As a result though able to complete the season without any match having to be conceded the 2nd XI struggled and in the end were relegated from Surridge Wiltshire County Cricket League Division 5 to Division 6. Player retention and recruitment are therefore urgent issues to be addressed. The first XI faired better and ended the season comfortably placed in Division 1 at mid-table Won 7 Lost 7 with 4 cancelled due weather.. As in recent years both XI’s were strengthened by the summer holidays invasion of younger members on their summer break from University and School. The Sunday League XI; which is something of a Development Squad, plays in the North Somerset Cricket Conference Premier Division and yet again had successes against the top teams in North Somerset. The Midweek XI though often having to scratch around to collect eleven players still managed to reach the final of the Wessex League 20/20 Cup. A very related and encouraging aspect was the success of the younger component of the adults who scooped trophies at the Annual dinner. The Player of the Year Trophy champ was 21 and the Young Player of the Year and Best Individual Performance of the Year Trophy winners were both in their teens. The very strong Youth Section with as many as 75 boys (not girls’ sadly!) age grouped from under 15, 13, 11 down to 9 should continue to supply a small stream coming through to adult cricket. Winter Nets These take place every Sunday startting on 26th Feb. at the Knights Sports Centre, Monkton Combe from 5pm-6.30pm. The cost is £3 person, £5 per family. Administration On the management front the finances of the club continued to improve. There has been a huge benefit from the massive input of Treasurer Katie Borton and her co-conniver the Head of the Bar Committee Hugh Brooker. On the down side there has been the continuing lack of prompt payments of subscriptions, of match taxes and of bar payments - sadly the guilty parties were usually the younger group! Permanent Cricket Nets There has been continued improvement of the permanent nets - a new structure and new netting was purchased and erected and installed by a group lead by Andrew Taylor. This has improved the safety factor as the net length has been extended too. Taylor was awarded the Clubman of the Year prize at the annual dinner a fair reward for his expertise and work on this project - as well as his on-going leadership and Senior Coach efforts in the Youth Section
