HINTON CHARTERHOUSE CRICKET CLUB The Club is located between the Branch Road to the A36 and Green lane, and access to it is from the former. The entrance is about 200 metres from the main road that runs roughtly north south through the village. The beautiful ground is in a prime location bounded by tall mature trees, with the Clubhouse and Millennium Green on one side and the grounds of Hinton House on the other History. Cricket in Hinton has a long history. Robin Robertson Glasgow's family diaries speak of the village playing (and losing) way back in the mid 19th century. In those days it would be the blacksmith, the local squire and the vicar each having a hand in it. However we don't have to go that far back in our records to find that the vicar of the day insisted that the Sunday matches ended in time for the teams to attend the evening service; he must have owned the lawn mower to have wheeled such power! Current Club. During the last few years the club has gradually widened it's appeal and has been promoted to the West of England Premier League Wiltshire Division. This requires the teams to travel on Saturdays quite regularly throughout Wiltshire, with opposition in the league including Devizes and Trowbridge 2 XI. In 2007 the 1st XI finished 6th and the club 2nd XI 3rd in their respective divisions. The Sunday League XI finished 2nd and achieved promotion for the second year in succession, this time to Division 1 The club is totally amateur with nobody receiving remuneration. It has made a policy decision to not pay professionals, even though the majority of clubs at our level now do so; these are usually overseas players. The Club has a full fixture list and in a typical season plays a total of about 90 games, of which around 75 are at home. See also web site www.hccc.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp The largest step forward in recent years has been the expansion of the Youth Section. Following a relatively dormant period in the 80's, the youth section was resurrected in 1989 and is now totally integrated in the club. There are three main age groups, under 15, under 13 and under 11 , each playing in the Bath and NE Somerset Youth League. In 2007 the under 15s finished fifth in their division , the under 13 were top of their division and were runners up in their League Cup and the under 11s were unbeaten. The under 9s gather under supervision on Sunday mornings. The young players have the first choice of the use of the pitches for matches on Monday Tuesday and Thursday evening. Training takes place for U11 and U13 on Thursday evenings and U 15's on Fridays. All training is under the watchful eye of a senior qualified coach. Membership of the Club is open to non-players. To join it is necessary to join the 100 club which includes an element for membership. The Clubhouse is designed for disabled use and includes good facilities for both players and spectators alike. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome.
