The Ridings is a volunteer car scheme that provides essential transportation services to residents of Norton St Philip, Hinton Charterhouse, and Laverton who face challenges in getting to their medical appointments. Our passengers often express concerns such as:

  • Feeling uncomfortable continuously asking family and friends for help
  • Finding taxis too expensive, especially when considering waiting times
  • Struggling with bus timetables that don’t align with their appointments
  • Dealing with mobility issues that limit their walking distance or require a stroller or wheelchair
  • Wanting a friendly face and conversation to reduce stress during their journey

Our dedicated volunteers help by driving passengers to various appointments, including hospital visits, GP consultations, physio sessions, optical and dental check-ups, and even veterinary appointments for their pets.

How it works:

  1. Passengers contact us via phone or email with their request for assistance.
  2. Our coordinators match the request with an available volunteer driver.
  3. The coordinator confirms the booking with both the passenger and the driver.

Passengers are encouraged to make a voluntary donation of approximately 50p per mile, which goes towards reimbursing our volunteer drivers for their mileage and any parking costs incurred.

We Need Your Help!

While we have a committed group of volunteer drivers, some are retiring, and the demand for our service is growing. We are in urgent need of more volunteers to ensure we can continue supporting our community.

If you would like to make a significant difference in the health and well-being of your neighbors by volunteering as a driver, please contact our Chair, Debby Hill, for more information:
